The “Gri” engine (see Gri on SourceForge for more details) allows to generate with little effort publication-quality plots from data columns stored in plain text files.

  • Install prerequisites
    $ brew install autoconf
    $ brew install automake
  • Clone a local copy of the Gri repository from either using ssh (requires ssh key setup with github account)
    $ git clone

    or using https

    $ git clone
  • Change current working directory to cloned Gri directory, then
    $ aclocal
    $ autoconf
    $ automake --add-missing
    $ ./configure
    $ make
    $ sudo make install

    If you encounter an error with epstopdf stating “Error: Cannot open Ghostscript for piped input”

    do cd /usr/local/bin ; ln -s gs-noX11 gs to fix the problem

    Note : gs (ghostscript) is removed in new versions of MacTex, so you have to use either gs-X11 (requires X11/Xquartz installed) or gs-noX11

    Hi everyone,

    If you are seeing error like this when trying to use Gri after upgrading your homebrew or macOS:

    dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/local/opt/netcdf/lib/libnetcdf.7.dylib
    Referenced from: /usr/local/bin/gri
    Reason: image not found

    It will most likely you local build of Gri is corrupted during some update (unfortunately this happens all the time). The quickest solution right now would be simply reinstall following the instructions.
